Doughnuts. Everyone loves them - whether they're filled with fudge, hot chocolate sprinkles on them or just a plain old glazed doughnut with a hole.

The age-old question of why doughnuts have holes in them has finally been answered. There were many theories throughout the years - one of the more outlandish ones was that Captain Hanson Gregory invented doughnuts in the 19th century when he was 16. The reason there's a hole in the middle, according to him, is so that when you fry them they're not raw in the middle. Other people have claimed it's so you can thread them on a rope - people in New York used to sell bagels like that.

All wrong. Completely wrong!

Twitter user silverfox clears it up for us. He purchased a box of doughnuts from supermarket chain Morrisson's and was devastated to find there were no holes in them.

"Oi there's no ring in my doughnuts how I'm I supposed to put these on my willy and get my girlfriend to eat them off now."

And they say romance is dead.

So there you have it. Doughnuts have holes in them because they are used in a particular extra-curricular activity. Ahem.

Morrison's decided to tweet the disappointed man back - and an ingenuous social media account manager told him he needed to improvise.

Then this happened...

This is one instance where I hope it's just a joke.

Better wait for the bagel retort next week.
