A woman over in New Jersey experienced the shock of a lifetime when the food poisoning she thought she had turned out to be a serious case of pregnancy.

Patricia Crawford didn't make the discovery until she was giving birth to a baby boy on her bathroom floor.

Both Patricia and her husband Evan Darragh are overjoyed at their unexpected delivery, although to say they weren't prepared would be an understatement.

Up until the night their son arrived on 28 March, the nausea Patricia was suffering from was put down to some sort of sick bug.

Speaking to News 12 New Jersey, the new mum said: "By the time I got back to the toilet area all of a sudden a baby came sliding out.

"It was just like, 'Oh my God. What are we even going to do?'"

Of all the things you expect to see in your toilet bowl, I'm pretty sure a baby is low down on the list.

"We [didn't] have a diaper, a wipe, an outfit, a onesie. Nothing," added Patricia.

The only symptom experienced was sickness - aside from that, there were no signs she had a kid on the way.

She said on that day in particular, her mind had been elsewhere, as it was exactly one year since the unexpected death of her father.

"I was kind of just getting through day by day, keeping myself as busy as possible. Just zooming around."

Just as her dad was taken from her without warning, so her baby boy - who they named William James after Patricia's pop - was delivered out of the blue, serving as a moving reminder of the circle of life.

And if it weren't significant enough that the boy arrived on that day, he even came out at 5am, the time when her father would set an alarm to get up for work.

Although the couple weren't given any warning, they are over the moon about the latest addition to their family - apparently they'd been trying to have a baby for some time.

The fact that he made his way into the world on this poignant date makes the whole thing even more special than it already is.

"I think my sister said it best," added Patricia. "She [said] it was like my dad came from heaven and said, 'You will no longer be sad on March 28 ever again.'

"It's really the best thing in the world."
