A 50-year-old mother-of-four and grandma-of-two who thought she was experiencing the menopause discovered her symptoms were actually down to being 26 weeks pregnant.

Michele Hall and her husband Jerry, from Florida, made the unexpected discovery back in October - just two months before her due date.

The news came as a surprise, not least because of the fact that she didn't even notice the telltale signs, but also because doctors had previously told Michele that she was menopausal and had 'close to zero' change of getting pregnant.

Although she hadn't experienced any periods for a year, she assumed this was just a natural part of the so-called change of life. Plus, she didn't put on any extra weight or feel morning sickness, and assumed the aches and pains were a result of having lupus, an autoimmune disorder.

However, after experiencing these symptoms for a while and not being able to get to the bottom of it, Michele decided to take a pregnancy test on the off-chance that she was with child - and lo and behold, it came back positive.

The family all went through a range of emotions after finding out Michele was just weeks away from giving birth to a baby boy.

"Everyone was in shock," Michele Hall told Naples Daily News. "Definitely in shock," her husband agreed. "It does make me feel young, though."

"Not me," added Michele. "I don't feel so young right now."

Even though the pregnancy was unplanned, it was a no-brainer for the couple, who decided there and then to keep their baby.

Speaking about their retirement plans, Michele said: "We have to put the brakes on that and start over again." Although it did throw a spanner in the works, they see the pregnancy as a blessing.

Due to Michele's age, the birth was considered high risk and so she underwent a scheduled cesarean delivery.

They named him Grayson and although at first he had some breathing issues and an episode of sleep apnea, the newborn was soon sent home with his family and is said to be doing well.

As for the parents, they've vowed this'll be their last kid, for reals this time - the doctor removed her fallopian tubes during the c-section.

"I'm 100 per cent sure I'm not having any more kids," she said, although she was sure to add that she's grateful for her son's arrival. "He's a blessing."
