We get that the latest fashion trends are related to sustainability (green is good, and all that) but perhaps Nike's latest venture is taking this idea a little too literally.

The online reaction to the shoes has been mixed.

This week, the sports brand announced plans to release Air Max 1 Golf 'Grass' shoes and they do exactly what they say on the tin. The new footwear will feature 4G turf around the outside, with a just-about visible white swoosh and a gum rubber outsole with golf-ready traction. Just like you always wanted.

Sure to make any golfing fanatic scream 'what are those?!?', the shoes make quite the fashion statement thanks to their unusual design by Tinker Hatfield.

The sneakers' release date is yet unknown, but already a number of fans are gearing up to bag a pair when they go on sale, expected to retail at $140 (£110).

As you'd imagine, there's been mixed reaction to the announcement so far, with many questioning whether the creators had been smoking the same material they're made out of, if you catch our drift.

"Perfect shoes for mowing the lawn," remarked one Twitter user, while another wrote, "These look like shoes I would be so proud of when I was ten, but so embarrassed when I saw a picture of myself wearing them."

On the other side of the coin, a number of fans expressed praise for the inventions, with many describing the design as 'fire'.

"These are so crazy that I kinda want them," said one person, with another suggesting, "If the insoles were corkscrew I'd dig 'em."

Astro turf trainers? Well, OK.

Perhaps we'll get a little preview at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, which is currently underway. Nike sponsors a range of major stars in golfing sector, including Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods, Tommy Fleetwood and Francesco Molinari - you never know, we might see one of the players sporting an early handout from the company.

The question is, would you rock a pair of the Air Max 1 Golf Grass? Or do you feel astro turf footwear is a step too far into the left field?

If you're a member of the former camp, make sure you don't leave them out for your dog to find - they won't know whether to chew them to pieces or use them to mark their territory. Probably both.
