The shocking moment a man was attacked by two pit bulls as he tried to stop the dogs from mauling his pet Jack Russell has been caught on film.

John Brady was out with his six-year-old Jack Russell, Josh, when the two larger dogs went for the tiny terrier, KTLA reported.

As he stepped in to save his pet, the 52-year-old is bitten by one of the pit bulls, at one point he takes out a pocket knife to slash the dogs and save himself.

The owner of the dogs, an unidentified woman, can be seen in the clip trying, and failing, to control her dogs.

The video was uploaded to Facebook by Free Boogie. Alongside the clip, the Facebook user wrote: "So I'm getting a new story now. This just happened....there is a reason I don't touch other people's dogs of this calibre. No untrained dogs should be walking amongst the public without a muzzle!! WTF is wrong with people!!!"

In the clip you can see the man's leg bleeding before Avalon Harbor Patrol officers were able to pull the dogs off Brady.

Brady told KLTA: "All I did is lift my dog off the ground and I was being chewed on instantly.

"My dog, I just, thank god he's alive because I want to be with him now. He's my best friend in the world."

He was airlifted to hospital where he remains in recovery; the pit bulls ripped out a piece of his calf and he also received bites to his arms.

Little Josh is being looked after by vets. He underwent surgery for a gash under his leg and is expected to make a full recovery.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help with Brady and Josh's medical bills - so far, it has raised $10,680 (£8,332).

Deputies told CBS Los Angeles that they had spoken to the woman and she had agreed to her dogs euthanized. There has been no mention of whether any charges will be filed. However, Brady could potentially sue for negligence.
