Full-time cockney and EastEnders star Danny Dyer has announced he wants to play The Doctor following Peter Capaldi's departure in Doctor Who.

Dyer, who plays Mick Carter on the legendary BBC soap, looks as if he wants to leave behind the mean streets of Walford for pastures new in outer space.

"I'd be interested in it," he said. "I could see myself in the scarf and all that."

He added to the Daily Star: "I think I could do it easy. I'd keep my accent, too."

It's not just Dyer who is interested in taking over the role. An online petition has been created demanding the BBC gives him a shot.

"My understanding is that Danny Dyer has a contract in EastEnders until October this year. Mr Dyer should then move into the position of the new Doctor," it reads.

Peter Capaldi is set to step down after three years on the long-running sci-fi series, with his regeneration occurring in this year's Christmas special.

In an interview with Radio 2's Jo Whiley, the actor said: "I think Christmas 2017 I've just been told.

"But I'm still Doctor Who. I've got a lot to do - we're doing epic stuff. I'm not done yet.

"One of the greatest privileges of being Doctor Who is to see the world at its best.

"From our brilliant crew and creative team working for the best broadcaster on the planet, to the viewers and fans whose endless creativity, generosity and inclusiveness points to a brighter future ahead. I can't thank everyone enough. It's been cosmic."

Doctor Who boss Steven Moffatt said in a statement that working with Capaldi has been a lifelong dream.

He said: "For years before I ever imagined being involved in Doctor Who, or had ever met the man, I wanted to work with Peter Capaldi.

"I could not have imagined that one day we'd be standing on the TARDIS together. Like Peter, I'm facing up to leaving the best job I'll ever have, but knowing I do so in the company of the best, and kindest and cleverest of men, makes the saddest of endings a little sweeter."

Say Dyer does take the role, I wonder what his regeneration entrance would look like.

I reckon Capaldi's Who will be on the run in the East End from a bunch of West Ham fans. His companion, Clara Oswald, will be there on the sidelines, saying "Doctor! It's too late! You can't escape."

'I dinnae anticipate this, Clara," Capaldi will pant. "Aye, you're not wrong, it's my time tae get tae fuck."

He turns around and lets the lads go for him. But just as he's punches from fatality, his entire body starts to glow. Once it dies down, we see Dyer.

He gets up, lights a fag and says, 'Here I am, in me old stamping ground, bout to fackin get involved these absolute NUTTERS. Do I look nervous? You wouldn't be wrong. I mean, I've knocked abart wiv some total head cases in my time but this lot look like a different fuckin' breed."

He'll see Clara, call her a sort, and go "Christ, you look NAWTY."

The first episode could be called Doctor Who's Deadliest Daleks.
