A mum who has publicly admitted she was addicted to using heroin daily has spoken out about her recovery.

Posting before-and-after photographs to Reddit, the 24-year-old woman - who goes by the name of DisregardThisOrDont - lifted the lid on the story of her addiction.

"On June 11 2014 I went to jail for 36 days on a contempt charge," she wrote.

The woman explains how personal reasons, such as her daughter going to live with her mother, gave her the strength to change her life around.

"She is my whole world, so when that happened I fell into a deep depression," she added.

She revealed that her boyfriend's answer to her situation was to try heroin. She then relied on the drug daily for eight months, reports the Mirror.

Taking matters into her own hands, after several failed attempts at getting herself sober, she announced her addiction to the judge in charge of her daughter's guardianship case in a plea for support.

She wrote: "He found me in contempt of court and put me in the county jail until he could find me a bed in a rehab. From there I went to the best rehab in my state.

"Recovery has been an uphill battle but now I am at a point where it all just feels like a bad dream. There are people in my life who don't know about this of me and will probably see this. I knew that when I posted it. I felt the need to share it so openly because when I found my mugshot I felt so bad for that girl.

"I wanted to hug her and tell her it will get better. I then realised that girl is still out there somewhere. She isn't me anymore though. There are other addicts out there who are in the same circle of hell that I was in in that mug shot.

"So even if one of those people see this and get their shit together, then it was worth it [sic]."

The brave step forward to share her demons so publicly has led to other Reddit users to discuss their own substance abuse.

So basically, from her opening up about her turbulent past, it has helped others do the same, hopefully steering many more people on the right tracks to recovery. Fair play to her.
