Chris Cornell, the lead singer of Audioslave and Soundgarden, has passed away at the age of 52.

The rock star, who sang the theme song 'You Know My Name' for the James Bond film, Casino Royale, died suddenly on Wednesday night in Detroit.

A statement from his representatives was issued to The Associated Press in which his death was described as 'sudden and unexpected'.

They added that Cornell's wife and family were in shock and would be working with a medical examiner to determine the cause. They also asked for privacy.

He was due to play at US festival Rock the Range in Columbus tonight and, tragically, he was actively Tweeting just eight hours before news of his death broke.

Sharing a picture of a venue he was playing, he wrote: "Detroit finally back to Rock City!!!! @Soundgarden #nomorebullshit"

Twitter users have been sharing their own tributes to Cornell.
