Gary Lineker Reckons Schools Should Scrap Homework

Do you agree?

Gary Lineker reckons that kids do enough studying during the school day and forcing them to do homework, too, is 'stressful'.

And it's not just the students he's worried about, he thinks it's just as stressful for the parents who end up having to do it anyway.

He told Sport magazine: "Homework should be banned. All it does is drive a massive wedge between parents and children because you end up having to do it for them, and it's stressful.

"They get stressed and they don't want to do it. They're at school long enough as it is. Why do you have to come home and do two hours of homework?

"I don't think many people probably agree with me. But a lot of parents would, especially if you've had four boys."

Gary has sons, George, 24, Harry, 22, Tobias, 20, and Angus, 18, so I'm sure he's had his fair share of homework hassles throughout the years.

I don't actually remember getting much homework while I was at school, but maybe I just got my parents to do it, too.

Best school ever?

While Gary thinks his idea might be unpopular. He's certainly not alone, a number of schools across the UK have decided that work should be kept in schools.

In the schools where it has been trialed, it's been a big hit. And it's not just with the kids; parents and teachers have also given it the seal of approval.

Philip Morant School and College in Essex made the decision to ban homework last year, becoming the first UK secondary school to do so.

It wasn't just the schools' 1,650 pupils who were happy; parents and teachers both praised the school's principal, Catherine Hutley, for making the decision.

Catherine said that by doing away with homework the teaching staff would be able to make better lessons plans. Speaking to the Mirror, she said: "The job of a teacher is impossible.

"We have the most dedicated and committed staff you could possibly ask for. They are working every hour God sends but planning lessons can fall by the wayside.

"We want it to be the number one priority so teachers can plan for students' individual needs and keep on top of their progress on a daily basis."

A school in Scotland also opted to scrap homework last year, instead telling its pupils they should read comics.

Before making the decision, Inverlochy Primary School in Fort William, Scotland asked the kids if they wanted to get rid of homework. Surprisingly, 21 percent said no. However, majority ruled and the 79 percent won and algebra was out and Batman and the Beano was in.

The parents were also asked and 62 percent agreed that their kids reading comics and magazines would be more beneficial than 'homework for homework's sake'.

One dad, Barry, echoed Gary's views, saying: "Homework stresses the kids and the parents out. Kids have so many things outside school, like clubs. They just need time to be kids."

As someone who likes to read comics, I fully support this decision.
