A Dutch man flew from The Netherlands to Hunan province in the hope of meeting his girlfriend after a two-month online romance.
Alexander Pieter Cirk, 41, spent 10 days waiting to meet Ms Zhang, 26, at Changsha airport, the BBC reports.
Cirk told Chinese media that he first laid eyes on Zhang on an app and love soon blossomed and he booked tickets to meet her in person.
The curve ball to his plans hit him when Zhang hadn't turned up. Refusing to the leave the airport without her, he played the waiting game. His protest came to a bitter end, though, when he was hospitalised after suffering from physical exhaustion.
When giving her side of the story to Hunan TV, the lady in question claimed that by the time Cirk had arrived at the airport, she was busy having plastic surgery in another province so therefore couldn't answer her phone.
She also added her confusion to the whole situation, as she said: "We had advanced our romantic relationship but later he seemed a little callous towards me.
"One day he sent me a photo of air tickets abruptly and I thought it was a joke. He didn't contact me later."
Cirk was said to have flown back to Holland following his brief treatment of love's bitter sting in hospital.
He and Zhang are said to be continuing their relationship online. Will this lad never learn?
