Anyone who watched the latest series of Married At First Sight hoping for a fairy tale ending will have been sorely disappointed.

As will anyone who watched any of the previous series, come to think of it.

The show prides itself on using relationship experts to match prospective partners, with the goal of creating love.

But after a string of divorces, it's beginning to look like, actually, when you stick two strangers into a house together and force them to act like husband and wife, it doesn't really work too well. Who'd have thought, eh?

However, before you get too down in the dumps, it could just be that it's us Brits that are the problem, because our colonial cousins over in Oz have actually managed to squeeze a happy marriage out of their version of the program and even a baby, too.

Alex Garner and Zoe Hendrix met on the very first season of the show, back in 2015, and haven't looked back since they tied the knot as strangers.

The couple shared a chemistry that had the viewers in awe of their unlikely romance.

Within two weeks the pair had matching tattoos and nine months later they welcomed their first child into the world.

Speaking to Popsugar about the key to their success as a couple, Zoe said: "He definitely had to have a sense of humour.

"I love laughing and enjoying life, that's really important. I really wanted someone that could be open-minded. Some people just aren't and I find it hard to stand them.

"I did say that I didn't want anyone who was particularly a bogan [laughs]. It's really just that I want someone who's lived a bit. Like they have a bit of life experience. And someone who's ambitious and hardworking... I pretty much wanted my dad, repackaged."

Zoe also said that rather than there being an instant physical attraction, things developed during the time they spent together getting to know each other. So, maybe it's not all about that 'spark' after all.

"As I got to know him and as the show progressed I could see that he got a lot of attention from females. He's the quintessential Australian blonde man. And he's got striking blue eyes, they were what I noticed. He's got really beautiful eyes."

Ahhh. Isn't that nice? See, there is hope for the rest of us after all.
