Paxton was best known for his role in Aliens but he also starred in Titanic, Apollo 13, Twister and The Terminator. He is reported to have died from complications from surgery.

He received an Emmy for his role in the TV series Hatfields and McCoys. He was also nominated for three Best Actor Golden Globes for his performance in the HBO drama Big Love.

Most recently he was working on Training Day, a crime series, in which he played Detective Frank Rourke. He leaves behind his wife Louise Newbury and their two children.

Dozens of celebrities took to social media to pay their respects to the star. Rob Lowe wrote: "Devastated by the sudden loss of my close friend and one of the finest actors in the business, Bill Paxton. Renaissance man, raconteur and uniquely American national treasure. His filmography speaks for itself. His friendship was a blessing. My love to Bunny, James and Lydia.

"In his memory, on this Oscar Sunday, watch One False Move or A Simple Plan to see this lovely leading man, at his finest."

His True Lies co-star Jamie Lee Curtis wrote: "Nooooo. Bill Paxton is gone. Such a funny, talented, loving human."

Arnold Schwarzenegger, who also starred alongside Paxton in True Lies, and The Terminator, said: "Bill Paxton could play any role, but he was best at being Bill - a great human being with a huge heart. My thoughts are with his family."

Paxton's family said in a statement: "A loving husband and father, Bill began his career in Hollywood working on films in the art department and went on to have an illustrious career spanning four decades as a beloved and prolific actor and filmmaker.

"Bill's passion for the arts was felt by all who knew him, and his warmth and tireless energy were undeniable. We ask to please respect the family's wish for privacy as they mourn the loss of their adored husband and father."
