The chippy is one of the few real joys in life. Yeah, you might have a loving family, a nice home, a sense of well being... but nothing compares to the warmth a well-deserved chippy dinner that's warming your lap after a long day.

Papa's Fish and Chips in Hull, East Yorks, recently won the title of 'Britain's best fish and chip shop' after a cook-off on BBC2's Best Of British Takeaways.

They decided to celebrate by being top LADs and handing out 10,000 portions of their incredible fish and chips for just 1p each. The stunt cost them £40,000, with a regular 10oz haddock and chips usually costing punters £4.25.

Dino Papas owns the chain with his dad, Sid, and his brother, George. He said: "It's not about the money for us, we are here to give something back and to celebrate being number one." Dino had promised to hand out the food for 1p if he won. And he kept that promise. What a gent.

Understandably, the idea of Britain's best fish and chips for a measly 1p struck a chord with the public. To be completely fair, if that was round my way I'd be the sad bastard who sets up camping the night before so that I'm first in line.

Some people ended up waiting around an hour and 15 minutes for service. But in all honesty, that's still very impressive when you see the size of the queue...

To keep them entertained, the chain offered punters the opportunity to skip to the front by giving them the chance to make the best batter they could or eat a spoonful of Chilli American Chip Spice.

The programme showed the owners taking TV chef, Tom Kerridge, behind the scenes of the restaurant to see how they prepare and serve their food. Tom remarked at the time: "I've just spent a couple of hours witnessing one of the most incredible food services I've ever seen.

"The standard is so incredibly high."

Well done, LADs. Feel free to send some of that food up this way.
