Greggs - where do we start?

The saviour of early morning starts, offering a bacon or sausage butty, with a coffee, for £1.50. The enabler of on-the-go lunches, with the endless options of pies, pasties and rolls. A true king of the UK high streets. A national treasure, in its own right.

Earlier this year, though, the popular bakery added healthy options to its menu. This is something that's not necessarily associated with Greggs. Despite this, the healthy options have helped to increase sales in the last six months.

Revenues were up six percent to £422million, helped by the Balanced Choice menu.

Because of the success of the healthy options (eurgh), more stuff that is apparently good for you are being added to the menu.

Roger Whiteside, Greggs chief executive, said that soups and packets of nuts and fruit are to be introduced in the autumn and gluten-free options added later this year.

"There will be new soups and we're going to revamp our snack range, going own-label on crisps and introducing nuts and fruits packets," he said. "We'll also see the first gluten-free products launch in the second half of the year."

Now, I know I'm not being forced to purchase these healthy options, and my typical order of a steak bake, sausage roll and can of Coke will still be available, but I just can't help but think that for it to be a legitimate Greggs product, it should be slathered in grease.

Anyway, I'm off for a pie.
