The Bacon Sarnie Has Been Voted Britain's Favourite Sandwich

No trophies for guessing...

In news that will not shock anybody, the bacon butty has been crowned Britain's favourite sandwich.

According to a poll by food magazine Olive, Brits would rather tuck into a bacon sarnie than one filled with with prawn mayo, egg and cress or beef and horseradish. How on Earth a simple cheese sandwich hasn't made the list, I do not know.

The popular BLT also couldn't topple the bacon sarnie from the top spot.

Olive editor Laura Rowe, presumably as part of the poll, decided to share her 'top tips' for making the perfect bacon sandwich.

Naturally, the top tip is simply, "Don't scrimp on the bacon." And why would you? If it doesn't have at least four rashers in it, it's not a bacon sandwich - I'm looking at you needlessly expensive cafes in trendy cosmopolitan parts of town.

Next up, buy the best stuff. Know the difference between a lean bit of back bacon from the loin and streakier rashers that come from the belly. Pick which one you prefer and try to make sure it's dry-cured for the best flavour.

Rowe says choosing the right bread is also crucial. Shit bread won't hold your sarnie together and ultimately you'll be more disappointed at the bacon fat on your shirt and fingers than the bacon in your belly.

She then concludes by saying that if you're a butter lover, make sure it's room temperature, soft and salted. For me, a dollop of ketchup or brown sauce will do the trick.

This is all in aid of British Sandwich Week which starts today until May 14. A whole week to appreciate sandwiches... I can get on board with that.
