It’s beginning to look at lot like Christmas in Temple Bar

Temple Bar’s Christmas tree just went up in central Dublin - and if you're within 5km, you might even get to see it.

It gets earlier every year, we know. Sure wasn't it just Halloween a week ago? Well, yeah. It is earlier than ever, and yes, we're only half way through November, but honestly, we need something to look forward to at the minute and this might well be it. Temple Bar just put its Christmas tree up and, given the pack of unholy shite that this year has been, that's something worth getting excited about.

Right, so let's get the tough stuff out of the way. Christmas might yet be cancelled. Well, not cancelled, but downgraded. Unless you live within 5km of Temple Bar, this might mean nothing to you, but given that 25% or so of the population do live within 5km of the Christmas tree, you might have to indulge us for a second.

The current projection is that we'll be back out in the world by December 1st, just in time for an avalanche of Christmas cheer and, of course, shopping and pubs and all that good stuff as well. 2020 has been an absolute right off of a year and it stands to reason that Christmas too will also be cancelled, or ruined, or something equally as unpleasant that I haven't yet thought of, but to allow me the sliver of hope that this Christmas tree represents.

The tree is, of course, outside the Temple Bar pub, and doesn't it look lovely. And think about it: if it does reopen, and we are allowed out, then there'll be almost zero irritating tourists getting the way. We'll actually have the gaff to ourselves to enjoy. No Americans. No Brits. No Stags. No hens. It sounds like heaven

Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan - a man who has gone from the obscurist of obscure to appearing on The Late Late Show with Bruce Springsteen - is obviously reticent to get our hopes up.

"I imagine, when the time comes, we will give relevant advice in relation to Christmas but we are not in a position to start speculating on what that will be at this point in time," he said.

As for Christmas drinks, he was not for getting on the swall any time soon, at least not in close proximity to many other people. "That is not our advice and it is not the advice I anticipate giving and I am not going to start speculating any further than that on exactly what we are going to say."
