Apparently Drinking Alcohol After Working Out Is 'Worse Than Not Going To The Gym At All'

Apparently Drinking Alcohol After Working Out Is 'Worse Than Not Going To The Gym At All'

Another excuse not to go to the gym...

As if any of us needed any more excuses to sack off the gym and go to the pub, research now suggests that boozing after certain exercises actually has a more negative impact on your body than not going to the gym at all.

The study, published in the Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research, got 10 males and nine females to complete heavy resistance workouts and then had them drink either alcohol or a placebo.

Certain chemicals that aid muscle growth were then analysed from all the different samples.

There scientists found that people who drank alcohol after exercise had less of the chemicals that would aid muscle growth.

I had a choice of including two quotes, one full of technical jargon which I suspect about 4% of people will understand and one from the co-author who sums it up in layman's terms.

Study co-author and professor of biology and kinesiology at the University of North Texas, Jakob Vingren, said: "A little bit of alcohol is probably not a problem. But if you're doing heavy resistance training, if you're going to go out drinking that night, don't go to the gym right before. It's possible the next day you're going to be worse off than if you hadn't gone to the gym."

I'm absolutely all for not going to the gym and going to the pub instead. How else will I sculpt my perfect dad-bod?

However, this is just one study and there are plenty of others to suggest drinking beer isn't as bad for you as people seem to believe.

I guess it's each to their own when it comes to looking after their bodies.
