Jeremy Kyle eat your heart out. A mother and son have been told that their love affair could land them each a lengthy jail sentence, but not even that will tear this 'madly in love' pair apart.

Monica Mares, 36, and her son Caleb Peterson, 19, first embarked on their love affair last year at Christmas when the two met for the first time in 17 years, reports Daily Mail.

Mares, who gave birth to her son when she was 16, didn't raise Peterson and the two decided to meet up after finding one another on Facebook.

The couple soon began to develop romantic feelings for one another and things became complicated, to say the least.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Mares said: "It felt like I met somebody new in my life and I fell in love with him."

"At first I told him, 'I'm sorry I don't know how you are going to react to this. I'm your mom and you're my son, but I'm falling in love with you".

"And he said: 'You know what I am too. I was scared to let you know'."

It gets worse. Now that the two are romantically involved with each other, Mares's youngest son is even believed to call Peterson 'dad'.

The 17-year-old claims that he started to develop romantic feelings for his mother just one week after meeting her and claims that it was him who made the first move.

When the police found out about the affair, the couple were charged with incest - a fourth-degree felony in New Mexico.

However, the mother and son lovers were held in custody after unashamedly breaching their no-contact bail conditions.

Both Peterson and Mares were released on a $5,000 bond and await a trial that will commence in September.

As a result of the incest, Mares is banned from seeing any of her children or have any contact at all with Peterson, yet stands by the fact that she believes it has all been worth it.

Despite the risk of being sent to a state prison, both Mares and her son want to continue to fight for their love.

Incest in Mexico is a crime and carries a maximum 18-month jail term and/or a $5,000 fine.
