Scientists Say One Eye Colour Is More Likely To Lead To Alcoholism

They've found a link.

There are about a million excuses for having a drink. Stressful week at work, a promotion, a birthday. But now there are a million and one excuses.

Scientists have discovered that your eye colour can also give you a greater thirst for booze.

The research team at the University of Vermont have found links between the two, and found that alcoholism is more common in people with blue eyes. It's less frequent between those with dark brown eyes.

The team also found that the most common eye colour for a family of alcoholics are dark brown eyes.

The study, which would seem to side with alcoholism having a genetic cause, sampled 1,263 genetic profiles.

They were pulled from a database that only contained people diagnosed with at least one psychiatric illness, which includes an addiction to, or dependence on, drugs or alcohol.

For this study, the geneticists filtered the database for patients with alcohol addiction or dependence and European ancestry.

Repeated analyses of the sample led to the conclusion that European Americans with light eye colours, including blue, green and grey had a higher likeliness of alcohol compared to their dark-eyed compatriots.

It's not exactly ground-breaking news though, geneticists have known for a while that many people of Asian descent have had a hard time holding their liquor, compared to Europeans, because their bodies make an atypical version of an enzyme (aldehyde dehydrogenase, if you're scientifically inclined) which metabolizes alcohol.

Now, I for one, can look at someone's eyes, but touching one, is completely different. Ommetaphobia is the name given to such a fear and includes everything from getting something in your eye to physically touching it (I once passed out trying to put eye drops in).

So, when it comes to eyes, things like that have a strong habit of freaking me out. So, if you feel the same, let's try and conquer this fear by looking at some more eyes.

How about this? Someone managed to photoshop a load of animals, who normally (and correctly) should have eyes on the side of their heads, with their goggles on the front instead. Weird as.

Now that you're over your fear, let's use eyes once again to freak you out.

In Mexico lies the corpse of a child who died over 300 years ago. The memorial, in the Cathedral of Guadalajara, was filmed opening its eyes.

What? How? Well, a lot of people think it's fake, but just what if? What if that did happen.
