On first glance, you wouldn't think anything was wrong with Perth teenager Alice Mulder. Yet she suffers from primary lymphoedema, which sometimes leaves her left leg weighing three kilograms heavier than her right leg.

The condition causes Alice's leg to swell up with lymphatic fluid. There is currently no cure.

The 19-year-old does not let it govern her life, continuing to play netball and swim and work out in spite of it.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, the marketing and law student said: "The condition has always been a thing for me.

"I've always been into fitness and looking fit. I put a lot of effort into that, which is hard because my leg will never change.

"My friends get it now. I'm always asking them to take photos from my good side."

Although the condition can start from birth, it can also develop during adolescence. Alice herself was 14 when she found out she had lymphoedema.

"When I twisted my ankle while I was playing basketball it got really swollen and never went down.

"That's when they diagnosed my primary lymphoedema."

Mulder is no doom-monger and remains very realistic and optimistic about her day-to-day life.

"I'd tell others going though a similar thing to not let it get to them," she said.

"You can still do the same things as everyone else.

"I'm at uni and I have great friends and I'm playing sport every day. I still go down to the beach and stuff.

"You can't let it stop you. It's just a bit of a pain sometimes."
