A health expert has revealed that using our mobile phones before bed could result in weight gain.
In a video for Business Insider, Dr Daniel Siegel explained that (to put a spin on the old saying), a minute on the fingertips could mean a lifetime on the hips.
He said: "People are exposing their eyes to a stream of photons from these objects that basically tells your brain, 'stay awake'.

"That light beam tells your brain 'don't secrete melatonin yet, it's not time for sleep'."
If you're scrolling through your social media feeds late at night, it forces you to stay up even later, meaning you get less rest.
And as Dr Siegel reveals, if you get less than seven hours of sleep a night, your glial cells are unable to clean up the toxins our neurones produce.

While there is a small percentage of people who aren't affected by these toxins, 95 percent of us are and insulin levels suffer.
Insulin helps regulate our metabolism, yet if we fail to get enough Zzzs it "turns it upside down" and causes weight gain.
Perhaps more simply put, tiredness increases our hunger levels, leaving us likelier to eat more and not burn off the calories because our metabolism has slowed down.
Dr Siegel encourages people to close their phones at least one hour prior to bed and end this vicious chubby circle.

You might read that and think "what?" Why would anyone voluntarily put aside their phone - their life - for an hour before bed?
Well, there are some health pros to doing this, including sharpening our memory and improving our problem-solving skills.
