Yesterday the world of music mourned the sad loss of Chris Cornell, frontman of Soundgarden and Audioslave, after he took his own life.

Cornell was found in the MGM Grand hotel in Detroit by a friend after Chris' wife, Vicky Cornell, contacted them and asked them to check on him in his hotel room, 4 WDIV Detroit reports.

They reportedly went to the hotel and forced open Chris' door. It was there where they found his body in the en suite bathroom.

A statement from his representatives was issued to The Associated Press in which his death was described as 'sudden and unexpected'.

During his last gig with Soundgarden in Detroit, at the Fox Theatre, all seemed well, with people saying he seemed to acting totally normally. However, concert photographer Ken Settle has gone back in his mind and thought about some of the things Cornell said during the performance.

"My first impression was that Chris was more joyous than I'd ever seen him before," Ken told People Magazine. "He'd always been, back in the early days especially, kind of a brooding performer, more introspective, sometimes looking down at his guitar most of the time with his hair in his face. At this show, it was the opposite of that.

"He said it very sincerely, that 'I've been telling people how great Detroit rock audiences really are.' He said it like he really meant it. But then he followed it by saying, 'I feel really sorry for the next city.'"

However, to add more sustenance to him seeming fine on the surface, his last words before his death have been revealed.

60 minutes after leaving the stage he passed away, but in that time he met with fans outside the venue, spoke with them and posed for photographs, the Daily Mail reports.

Then, as he was escorted away by security, he said to the fans "I love you".

He was found dead shortly after midnight.

Following the news many celebrities shared their condolences and tributes to the singer on Twitter.

A sad, sad loss.

RIP.
