A driver's last moments were recorded by police after he called the emergency services while his car was 'stuck in cruise control' at 119mph.

Kaushal Gandhi's car was out of control as he sped down the M40 before crashing into a stationary lorry, with the impact being fatal.

The 32-year-old's Skoda Octavia's cruise control had stuck open, an emergency call handler heard.

"I have kept pressing the button, but all it makes is a noise," Gandhi said in the call. "My speed is increasing. I think what has happened was I tried to change the mode on the car, because I was on the sports mode. I pressed a button to come onto the normal mode and then it is not allowing me to do anything."

The driver was then asked whether he'd tried applying the handbrake, before saying: "I am just going to check that, one second...," which was followed by the person on the other end of the line saying: "Are you still there? Hello, operator, I've lost the line."

Upon hitting the 18-tonne lorry, the car's roof was peeled back and had knocked the rear axle of the lorry. Data revealed that the Skoda was travelling at 116mph with the accelerator pedal fully depressed five seconds before the crash. Gandhi was tragically decapitated.

Gandhi said during the eight-and-a-half minute phone call that the speedometer told him he was doing 70mph, but he thought he was 'going much faster than' that. He kept trying to turn the engine of the car off using the start-stop button, but it didn't work.

This is such an awful incident.
