A ship that was searching for the missing EgyptAir flight 804 has picked up signals believed to be from the plane's black box, reports the Independent.

The black box will provide vital missing information into what caused the plane to crash as it entered Egyptian airspace on its way to Cairo from Paris.

A report from the Egyptian Aircraft Accident Investigation Committee says that the ship has detected the signals using sonar equipment.

In a statement from Egyptian Aircraft Accident Investigation Committee, they said: "The French vessel 'La Place' has received through its search equipment signals from the seabed of the wreckage search area, assumed to be from one of the data recorders."

"Extensive search efforts are being carried out to locate the two data recorders in preparation for their retrieval."

The plane went missing on May, 19, and all 66 people on board were confirmed dead.

Previous searches found metal panelling, items of clothing and yellow life jackets from the wreckage.

After the French Navy confirmed the detection of the signals, officials from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration told the Independent that American and European satellites detected distress signals pinpointing the plane's emergency location transmitter minutes after the Airbus A320 crashed.

Other ships will join the search to recover the black box later this week.
