Is there any moral equivalence between our politicians and ISIS? This was the simple question that was put out to LBC listeners yesterday.

An angry radio listener called in and made the mother of all statements that went down like a lead balloon with LBC presenter Maajid Nawaz.

It's probably important to point out at this stage for those who don't know, Nawaz is a former Islamic extremist who spent six years in prison in Egypt from 2001 to 2007. There he worked with Amnesty International and read about human rights, leading to his denouncing of Islamic extremism in 2007 and calls for a 'Secular Islam'. Since then he's become a leading Muslim political figure in the UK, criticising the rise of Islamism.

Anyway, in clear annoyance with British politics, the listener, Simon, passionately believed that the West's foreign policy decisions had fueled the rise of terrorism.

The presenter, who is also a British activist, author, columnist and politician, listened patiently until the point Simon began to trip up in his own statements.

"In responding to the issue that we face collectively, the people we are claiming are the problem solvers are potentially as insane as the terrorists themselves," Simon said.

Nawaz had heard enough and right on cue came this excellent response. "Come on, are you saying that Theresa May is as bad as ISIS? Last time checked she hadn't beheaded anyone," he replied.

"You've just said something I find frankly disgusting. Your talking to someone who was imprisoned in the war on terror."

Nawaz eventually had to hang up on the caller as he continued to dance around the original question that was asked by the station.
