17-year-old British racing driver, Billy Monger, has been involved in a 'horrific' crash at Donington Park today.

The young talent was racing in the F4 British Championship at the Leicestershire circuit when he ploughed into the back of a seemingly slow, or stopped, car.

As other drivers quickly moved out of the way, an unsighted Monger, smashed into the rear of the other car, believed to have been driven by Finnish racer, Patrik Pasma.

The accident was captured on dashcam and streamed on TV as part of the race coverage.

The race was stopped immediately as paramedics attended to Monger, with an air ambulance later arriving on the scene.

The British prodigy remained in the car for 45 minutes after the accident, while Pasma was 'taken to the on-site Medical Centre for assessment' and was 'fully conscious and able to communicate with team personnel' according to Carlin Racing.

Monger was 'trapped', as reported by ITV Sport, but was 'conscious' whilst being tended too.

After witnessing the crash, many British F4 followers were keen to express their thoughts for Monger.

Monger, who refers to himself on Twitter as Billy The Whizz, had posted to Facebook that he was "looking forward to this weekend".

On his website, it notes that he has been crowned British Champion twice, but "for 2017 it's my time to become the British F4 Champion".

"I strive for the win in everything I do. This is the only goal in my mind, to be the best. Ever."

The F4 British Championship is designed to be a 'low-cost entrance to car racing, and is aimed at young racing drivers moving up from karting'. The average price of a car being around £36,000.

Last year's winner, Max Fewtrell, was named as part of Formula One side, Renault's, Sport Academy 2017 line-up.

Prior to this weekend, Monger was in 7th place in the championship with 29 points, some way ahead of 8th place Oliver York with 10 points. He was top of the Ford F4 Challenge Cup though, 21 points in front York, his nearest competitor for that particular trophy.
