Disgraced American golfer, Tiger Woods, told police that he was on anti-anxiety drug Xanax and other prescription drugs on the night of his arrest.

The former world number one was found asleep behind the wheel of his Mercedes on the side of the road in the early hours of May 29.

Woods, who has fallen down the world rankings after a series of operations on his body, passed two breathalyser tests but failed multiple field sobriety tests.

These tests include: the 'follow a slow moving object' - a bit like tracing a finger; the 'walk-and-turn' test - nine steps touching heel-to-toe in a straight line and back again; and the 'one-leg stand' test - must be done for 30 seconds.

In a statement, Woods had previously said he had an 'unexpected reaction to prescribed medications'.

Although he had told officers he had taken several prescriptions, Xanax was not mentioned. Previously the investigation report was censored for legal and security reasons.

These censors were undone following a public records request by The Golf Channel.

One part revealed a note from officer Christopher Fandry, who interrogated Woods at the scene. He wrote: "I asked Woods if he had taken any medication to which he stated 'Xanax'."

He added that Woods had told him again whilst doing the field sobriety tests, but failed to mention it to other officers at the testing facility.

Jack Nicklaus, along with other golf stars, has since come out in support of Woods, saying that he will help in any he can.

Woods, for 12 out of the first 15 years of this century, was the highest earning sportsman according to Forbes.

Between 1997 and 2008, Woods won a total of 14 majors, but has failed to win any since the US Open nine years ago.

His career took a downturn when, in 2009, he was at the centre of an affair scandal which saw him divorce his then wife, Elin Nordegren.

This, along with a host of back, knee and elbow injuries, is thought to have prevented him from returning to the great form he once demonstrated.
