The fight date between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor has been set, after the Nevada State Athletic Commission approved the potential bout.

According to Yahoo sports, the fight will take place at the MGM Grand Arena on August 26 and both fighters have taken to social media, appearing to confirm the event.

The bout is set to be distributed via Showtime pay-per-view, with Mayweather Promotions as the lead promoter.

Rumours started to circulate on Monday when Mayweather Promotions, Floyd's own company, put a provisional date in the Nevada State Athletic Commission event diary.

McGregor also put out a teaser at the start of the week, with a tweet saying: "Something BIG is coming #Notorious".

Earlier this year, there were rumours that the T-Mobile Arena, also in Las Vegas, had been signed up to host the fight.

In May, he told The Mac Life: "It is an honour to sign this record-breaking deal... The first, and most important part of this historic contract has now officially been signed off on. Congratulations to all parties involved. We now await Al Haymon and his boxer's signature in the coming days."

Dana White, the UFC president, followed by saying that he was "starting to work" on the Mayweather side of the deal.

Two months prior to that McGregor announcement, Floyd Mayweather - who is undefeated in 49 fights - had told the media, in a sit-down interview, that he would be coming out of retirement.

He said: "Everybody get your phones out and get this on the internet ASAP. I'm coming out of retirement to fight Conor McGregor, so right now I'm not retired. If you're serious, sign the paper work and let's fight in June."

The MGM Grand Arena can hold 16,800 and is one of the most famous arenas in boxing, it's held events such as: Oscar De Lay Hoya v Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao v Floyd Mayweather and Evander Holyfield v Mike Tyson.

However, with recent fights such as Kell Brook v Errol Spence Jr and Anthony Joshua v Wladimir Klitschko enjoying huge crowds at football stadium (Bramall Lane, Sheffield and Wembley Stadium, London), would the MGM Grand be big enough?

America's largest arena is the 24,000-capacity Rupp Arena in Kentucky. The largest in the world is the 55,000-seater Bocaue Arena in the Philippines - incidentally the home of one of Mayweather's biggest rivals, Manny Pacquiao.
