Tennis player Bethanie Mattek-Sands has suffered a tragic end to her Wimbledon hopes after being taken away in an ambulance during her match against Sorana Cirstea.

The American fell to a heap on the floor of court seventeen today, screaming 'help me', while clutching her knee.

Initially no one noticed the severity of her injury, it was only until she began to shout and her opponent waved for help.

Mattek-Sands' doubles partner, Lucie Safarova, was seen beside the court looking very worried for her, visibly distressed by the injury, Metro reports.

@WTA_insider reports that it is an acute knee injury and she has gone straight to hospital, with it looking like she'll be out of competition for the foreseeable future.

She was due to compete in the women's doubles competition with Lucie Safarova and after having already won both the Australian Open and the French Open this year.

We hope she has a speedy recovery and gets back playing soon.
