Shocking footage has emerged of a bouncer punching a woman in the face, but all may not be as simple as it seems.

The short video, which shows an argument taking place in Mathew Street, Liverpool, shows a woman lunging, initially, at a bouncer.

She throws a punch in the doorman's direction, which, with quick reactions, he ducks to avoid. With a rush of blood to the head, he follows it up by throwing a right hook into her face.

The woman's head kicks back from the blow before she staggers (although remaining on her feet) as her legs begin to buckle.

Moments later she can be seen on her feet, alongside another woman, arguing further with the unnamed bouncer.

The footage has been retweeted 2,000 times and liked by 2,700 people at the time of writing. It first appeared on Twitter last night, after being posted by a user called Kirsty, although it is not clear who filmed it and when. Someone claiming to be in the video has since tweeted.

The video prompted a clear division in opinions, with some lashing out at the bouncer for his actions, while others defend him.

One user wrote: "He was in the right? She wanted to try and attack him and he landed a naughty right, good on him."

In support, another said: "She literally swung for him like. Act like a man, get hit like a man."

Another, a former doorman, saw no reason for the retaliation, as they said: "As an ex doorman myself this is fucking disgusting. Not enough characters to go into it as it's just shocking. Hope she's ok. Just no need."

Another added: "How can anyone say he is in the right here? Even if a bloke swings for a bouncer he should show restraint and defend himself?"

Merseyside Police confirmed that they received a report of an assault in Liverpool city centre on Sunday, April 16.

A spokesman said: "At about 6:50pm, a report was received that a woman had been assaulted by a man close to Hardy's Bar on Mathew Street.

"Officers attended and enquiries into the matter are ongoing."

Any witnesses are encouraged to provide information to Crimestoppers.
