Sickening trolls have targeted football-mad Braldey Lowery on Twitter days after his family revealed his cancer had spread further.

The heartless cowards have posted messages on social media about the five-year-old from Blackhall, County Durham.

Bradley's family said on an account created to raise awareness to his fight with the illness, "We have a lot of trolling about Bradley, it's a shame we have to read it as it's not like we have enough going on #hurtful."

Bradley's parents found out that his cancer had spread to his spine only a few days ago.

Writing on Facebook, they said: "Bradley's consultant has had a look at the images and give us some information but we will have to wait for the official results.

"Unfortunately the results are not what we wanted to hear.

"Bradley scans show that there has been a small reduction in some parts however there is a new tumour on the bottom of his back.

"As you can imagine we are devastated and heartbroken with this news as I really wanted the new treatment to work. Why is life so cruel?

"Why do we have to get bad news time after time? Why does my baby not get a break?

After being inundated with support from social media users, the family wrote a thank you post. "On a positive note, thank you to all that support Brad and his fight. Your encouragement and support gets us through the bad days #grateful," they said.

They have been raising money so that Bradley can undergo experimental treatment in the US.

During the campaign of awareness, the football-obsessed young lad has garnered the appreciation of Sunderland AFC, which he led out most recently before Saturday's game away at Everton.

They stunned the family when they donated £200,000 towards his treatment.

Bradley has since been asked by the FA to be a mascot for England's World cup qualifier against Lithuania on March 26.

He was also a guest of honour at the BBC Sports Personality Of The Year ceremony.
