A four-year-old girl survived the Grenfell Tower fire after being caught 'like a rugby ball' when she was dropped from a fifth floor flat.

Residents from the surrounding area rushed to the tower block in the early hours of Wednesday morning to offer help in any way they could, while watching on in horror as people began to jump from windows or throw their children to escape the fire.

Eyewitnesses told the Mirror one woman was screaming for help from the fifth floor, about 50 feet up, holding her young daughter in her arms.

Twenty-year-old Kadelia Woods said: "The mum was screaming and the fire was raging like crazy."

A man called Pat then called up to the woman, telling her to drop the little girl and that he would catch her.

"Pat was calling: 'Drop her, I'll catch her'," she said.

"The mum was screaming, 'No, no, I can't!' Pat kept reassuring her and then the girl dropped. Everyone's hearts stopped but Pat managed to catch her like a rugby ball tucked into his chest."

The little girl was then treated at the scene by paramedics, while hero Pat was taken into hospital.

Heartbreakingly, Kadelia went on to say she didn't think the little girl's mum survived, saying the whole floor was on fire.

Three children are reported to have survived the inferno after being thrown from windows and caught by brave helpers.

Another local resident told Channel 4 News she had seen one baby saved after being dropped from the ninth or 10th floor.

This woman says she saw a baby thrown from the ninth or tenth floor of the West London fire - and it was miraculously caught on the ground.

She said: "The windows were slightly ajar - a woman was gesturing that she was about to throw her baby and if somebody could catch her baby.

"Somebody did, a gentleman ran forward and managed to grab the baby."

So far, 17 people have been confirmed dead in the tragedy, with police saying they expect that number to rise considerably over the coming weeks. According to reports in the Telegraph, the death doll could soar to more than 100, with over 70 people still unaccounted for since the fire.
