There's a growing increase in the number of stories of men looking like their celebrity heroes. From Kim Kardashian, yes, I kid you not, to David Beckham, people will do anything for the 'perfect' look.

In fact, the man who wants to look like DB, spent £20,000 to look like him - even when he's unemployed and living off benefits.

The latest addition to this select group of ordinary public members becoming celebrities is 46-year-old Shay Robertson, who's idol is Coronation Street actor, Shayne Ward.

But there's an added twist, Shay transitioned from Sally, over a period of five years, to get his ideal look.

The name, obviously, comes as a close resemblance to Shayne and he's even gone for the cropped hair and stubbly beard as well.

Shay had believed that he was a man trapped in a woman's body but it was only by watching Shayne on TV that he knew something had to change.

And the 2005 UK X Factor winner has thrown his support behind the decision. Shay told The Sunday Mirror: "I'm delighted he's so supportive. He inspired me to embrace my true self.

"Shayne's sister, Leona, had read about me in a magazine and told Shayne, who sent me a signed photo and note."

That note told Shay that Shayne was "honoured" to be such an inspiration.

In 2011, Shay, with the support of partner Julie McLean, 48 and his two children, Amy, 18, and Andrew, 27, began to inject hormones.

Then, over three years, followed a total hysterectomy, double mastectomy, and genital reassignment surgery - with skin grafts for his penis taken from his arm and buttocks.

He explained: "For years I thought I was a gay woman. But watching Shayne perform on stage, everything made sense.

"While most female viewers probably wanted to date him, I wanted to look like him. I finally realised I was trapped in the wrong body."

Shay said that he noticed something was up as a teenager when he denied his attraction to women and even moved in with a man he met at work - even having a baby, Andrew, with that bloke.

Despite living with Julie, Shay saw Shayne on TV and loved him instantly. "I touched my face while admiring his stubble and Julie said: 'You want to be a bloke, don't you?' Everything suddenly made sense," he added.

Julie, Shay said, loves the new look, and has been by his side all the way through.

"The procedures were gruelling," explained Shay. "I spent weeks in hospital. But I was delighted to see my silhouette becomes more masculine each time I was discharged."

After an 11-hour operation, Shay was given a penis. "Everything down there works perfectly and Julie and I are able to enjoy a normal, healthy sex life.

"My body has been through a lot, but finally I feel happy in my own skin.

"I am comfortable with who I am and love getting called 'mate' or 'fella' at the garage."
