Ofcom has revealed that TV and radio audiences are becoming less tolerant of discriminatory language.

When the broadcasting regulator first studied audience sentiment in 2010, they found racist or discriminatory words were considered to carry more of a sting than your everyday swear words.

In a study assessing 144 words, participants were screened clips of Big Brother and Don't Tell The Bride as well as Father Ted and Fawlty Towers.

Tony Close, director of content standards at Ofcom, said: "People draw the line at racist or discriminatory language... most people see these words as derogatory and insulting. Many were concerned about them being used in programmes at any time, unless there's very clear justification for it in the programme and how it's presented to the audience."

I'm sorry, but who the fuck watches telly, is fortunate enough to witness someone saying 'beef curtains' and then throw a strop?

The study showed that audiences were more easy-going after the watershed and if the language is intrinsic to the story or character.

UK viewers disliked slurs pertaining to race, orientation, gender, disability or religion.

'Bugger', 'bloody' and 'arse' were considered 'mild language', while 'bollocks', 'pissed' and 'shit' were considered 'medium language'.
