Police Called To Wetherspoons After Row Over 2p

Police Called To Wetherspoons After Row Over 2p

That seems a little extreme...

I love Wetherspoons; most people do. It's cheap, cheerful, there's decent food and a quiz machine in the corner. What more could you possibly want?

The best part is that if you're desperate for a pint at 2pm, no one will judge you.

Long live 'Spoons.

Sadly, like most places that sell alcohol, there's always going to be the occasional kickoff. Whether that be about whose round it is, or when someone's standing far too close to you at the bar, these things happen. Sometimes, though, things get so heated that the police have to intervene...

Tanya Powell was out at a Wetherspoons in Falmouth, Cornwall, celebrating her 46th birthday with around 40 friends and relatives. That in itself is pretty impressive - I can't manage to organise drinks with four people, never mind 40.

Anyway, she ordered the round and was told by staff that she couldn't take the drinks because she was short. 'By how much?!' you may be asking yourselves, with bated breath.

2p.

Yes, two pence.

Now, if you've worked in a bar, you'll know that occasionally people are a little short. And that's fine! These things happen. But when it's someone's birthday, you might be inclined to let them off. Well, the staff at the Packet Station were having none of it.

Tanya went and got the 2p, returned to the bar and was apparently 'rude and threatening'. Not cool, Tanya.

One of the guests at Tanya's birthday, Sarah Hibbert, told Metro: "It was just terrible customer service.

"To call the police out on something like this was a waste of police time, and something that could easily have been avoided.

"What they did was petty and pathetic."

Sarah explained that when the police turned up, they were great. However, she added: "It should never have escalated."

Wetherspoons spokesman, Eddie Gershon, said: "The police were called because a group of people involved in this incident threatened the manager and staff.

"The manager made the right decision to call the police and as far as we are concerned the group were out of order.

"They say that the police were called because one of the group was two pence short at the bar.

"They fail to say that the individual was then served when she returned with the correct money for her drink, but was rude and threatening to a member of bar staff."

I don't think anyone's come out of this situation particularly well. Is there a lesson here? Yes. Don't be 2p short. Problem solved.
