Next time you're about to pop out, or coming home, maybe just keep an eye on the front of your house and look for this sign. It could be the difference between your TV being nicked.

Police have warned homeowners to look out for small white stones outside their homes, as it could be a signal to thieves. Similarly, the stones have been left under the wheels of cars.

The stones have been left along with the delivery of a plastic clothing bag with a cancer charity's branding - although it is not suggested that anyone who works for a cancer charity is involved in criminal activity.

Police have stepped-up their patrols after they were left outside empty homes or the homes of vulnerable people, reports the Sun.

Local Neighbourhood Watch asked people to call police and tell them if they discover any stones that have been left on their drives, doorsteps, or by their car tyres.

The appearance of the stones were first in Portishead, near Bristol - and is suspected to be linked to a man delivering bags for 'charity' clothes donations.

The man is said to be white, slim and tall with a pale complexion, receding mousey-brown hair, which is longer than the average length, a goatee beard and was wearing a red t-shirt.

Nick Gough, area co-ordinator for Portishead's Neighbourhood Watch, said the man was driving a 'slightly scruffy' white Mercedes Sprinter van.

He said: "This alert should not cause you undue alarm but is a reminder to stay vigilant. We believe certain roads are being targeted by burglars because of suspicious activity detected over the past few days.

"There are reports of a male leaving white stones outside of various properties.

"These distinctive stones are believed to have been left outside of properties which look unoccupied. This includes stones being left under rear tyres of some cars, possible to act as a test for homeowner activity at the address."

He added: "Police patrols in the areas currently affected have been increased but please be vigilant."

Maybe, people should take heed from this man, who had his own message for burglars.

Get bricking up that front door.

Failing that, and let's say the worse did happen and you were faced with a robbery, take a leaf from this shop worker's book.

The coolness that he demonstrates are commendable.
