Ah, Fresher's week. A week when the peace and tranquility of most cities is completely ruined by the inebriated masses who sport bum fluff, offensive moustaches and scrape together pennies to seek solitude in the bottom of £1 vodka and energy drinks.

Usually, tensions run high, with one or two mega mouth lightweights unable to hide their desire to fight after too many drinks, and this story is no different.

One fool, who seemed to be channeling his inner Mike Tyson last year, bit off part of a fellow student's ear in Nottingham Trent's student union bar, The Level.

19-year-old Nathan Dresser was enjoying himself in the bar when the dance floor turned into a fight club, and fists changed from pumping the air to exchanging blows.

After the scuffle, Nathan was ambushed from behind by his fellow Fresher, who bit off a chunk of his ear.

He was rushed to Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham, where he was cleaned up and his ear was stitched.

Nathan has had to wait a year to get a date for reconstructive surgery on his ear, which will take place on October 7. Due to the severity of the injury, and the fact he was on a lot of meds, Nathan had to leave uni last year, but has finally returned to Nottingham Trent this week.

"A guy just grabbed me by the throat so we got into a little fight," the student said of the incident. "We walked away from each other and I stood on the dancefloor talking to someone.

"Five minutes later a guy ran up behind me and latched onto my ear and bit it off.

"I wasn't able to attend university so I decided to take a year out to try and get surgery."

Ear reconstruction is a highly specialised form of surgery, so it has taken a long time for Nathan to get a date for his operation. Now though, he's looking forward to enjoying all the things he missed out on last year following his recovery from the procedure.

"It was hard seeing all of my friends having a great time at uni while I was just at home.

"I'm having to start again but I can't start properly because I have to have surgery straight away."

The 19-year-old will have cartilage removed from his ribs, which will then be formed into the shape missing from his ear.

At the time, Nottinghamshire Police arrested one man in connection with the attack, but he was later released and now there are no suspects.
