Asda Is Ending The Tomato Sauce In The Fridge Or Cupboard Debate

What do you do?

While there is much scope for debating about political topics, or arguing about issues that effect the entire world, there are much more important things on the minds of the down to earth folk who know their place.

Is it red sauce for bacon, and brown for sausage, or the other way around? Should pineapple have its place on a pizza? Are Burger King's chips better than McDonald's? And is a Chinese the superior takeaway option against Indian?

All are very important topics that can be thought of as ridiculous by one, but be something another thinks is the best thing in the world. It's the same for the great sauce debate.

It's most likely the most homes you walk into will have a bottle of Tomato Ketchup somewhere or other. However, if you're asked to go and get said sauce, where to find it is a 50/50 choice.

It'll either be in fridge or the cupboard. There'll be people who are disgusted by the thought of their ever reliable bottle of Heinz sitting in the fridge, though there are people who will detest against those who store it in the cupboard.

Unlike mayo, which shouldn't be put anywhere other than the fridge, ketchup is completely down to preference. Despite this, Asda has decided to do a trial in order to put the debate to bed - kind of - the Daily Star reports.

After posing a poll to customers, asking where they keep the sauce, Asda's Clapham outlet has decided to keep some bottles on the shelf, while the rest will be in a refrigerated section.

"Tomato ketchup is a staple of many of our customers weekly shop but recent debate has prompted us to trial two areas to stock our great value own brand tomato ketchup sauces, so we can end the debate once and for all and give everyone what they want," Asda's Victoria Williams told the Daily Star.

After the poll found that 53 percent of people preferred the chill of the sauce on their chips, whereas 47 percent kept it at room temperature.

There are people who will quickly point out that in restaurants it'll be very rare for a bottle of ketchup to be brought to you straight from the fridge. And, of course, in places like McDonald's, Wetherspoon pubs and so on, they'll be in sachets kept out in the open.

However, if you've got a bottle of Heinz lying around, you might want to check the label just underneath the lid. Under the storage section it says: 'After opening refrigerate and eat within eight weeks.'

This is a revelation for two reasons. One: Obviously it's meant to be kept in fridge, and two: Eight weeks? I'm sure we've had a massive bottle of the stuff since 1998.

So there you have it, I guess.

However, while we're on the matter, remember the green ketchup Heinz tried flogging? What the fuck was all that about?

Looking back to the early 2000s, it was a sought after product for kids as it was a lot more exciting than regular red sauce, for some reason. However, now, if someone asked if I wanted fucking Flubber on my plate, they'd be getting a slap.

Back in 2000, BBC News reported that the Spinach-coloured sauce was being launched to appeal to the younger market. Looking back, it worked, to a certain extent; it just seems stupid now.

And while we're on a roll with pointless and ultimately useless condiment facts, let's keep it going.

Amidst a squirt, squeeze or pour of the good stuff, you've probably noticed the prominent '57' splattered across Heinz bottles, as well as many of their other products.

It's pretty common knowledge that the number represents the variety of products Heinz has, although, it is a little known fact that in the beginning, Henry Heinz simply used 57 because he thought it was a lucky number. Since then, the slogan '57 varieties' has stuck.

However, this is not the only interesting thing about the '57'. The number is actually strategically placed on the glass bottles.

Although most us won't buy the glass bottles anymore, we'll probably still use them at restaurants from time-to-time. And when we do have to use them, fuck me, it doesn't half turn into a struggle to get some of the sauce out of the bottle.

The '57' is placed on the bottle neck as the best spot to tap in order to get sauce out quicker, and more efficiently.

On the 'Trivia' area of the Heinz website, which I'm guessing you've never visited before, it says: "To release Heinz Tomato Ketchup from its glass bottle with extra speed, apply a firm tap to the spot marked '57' on the neck label."

Well I never. I would not like to know the amount of time I've wasted shaking, bashing, and sticking a knife in the lid to try and lure a drop of sauce out.
