When the subject of a meme passes away, the least anyone can do is spectacularly cement their legacy with a huge gesture.
City authorities in Istanbul have done just that for 'Tombili', a cat that became a meme earlier this year.
The cat, a native of Ziverbey in the Turkish city, went viral on social media after a picture was taken of him looking like a nonchalant boss.
Unfortunately, the cat passed away in August. After the tragic death, following a 'mystery month-long illness', flyers saying 'You will live on in our hearts, mascot of our street' appeared around the neighbourhood.

Then, a change.org petition which asked to commemorate Tombili's meme legacy gathered speed, with 17,000 signatures. Local sculptor Seval Şahin then agreed to make a bronze sculpture of the cat doing his signature pose.
On World Animal Day, on October 4, the statue was revealed.
Meme and cat lovers came together to leave candles, cat food and flowers in his honour.

This is the best way ever to commemorate a meme. Long live Tombili.
