Driving under the influence is never funny. But, you don't need me to tell you that. It's just plain common sense.

One man, however, went to the next level when he live streamed himself on Facebook Live downing whiskey and trying to outrun the cops.

Ryan Stiles filmed the stunt on Thursday afternoon, and now faces charges of driving under the influence, reckless driving, hit and run, and threatening a public servant.

The video began circulating online as Stiles led local police on a chase down a busy beach from Clearwater, Florida to Caladesi Island, damaging at least on unoccupied vehicle in the process.

Clearwater deputy police chief, Donald Hall, said: "We were very, extremely fortunate that we didn't lose any officers, nor did we lose any civilians."

Stiles' friend, Sarah Lynn Wright, told the Tampa Bay Times that he was upset about an earlier meeting he had with a public defender regarding a previous charge of resisting arrest.

When Stiles was told it was likely he'd face time inside for his offence, he stormed out and drove to his girlfriend's house, despite reportedly not having a valid driving license.

At around 4:30pm that afternoon, Clearwater police started to receive calls from eagle-eyed Facebook users who spotted the severity of what they were watching.

On the video, Stiles can be heard saying: "We're gonna god damn die!" while plowing over bins and chairs on the beach.

Panicked sunseekers can be heard screaming and running away, narrowly avoiding danger. Stiles also hit an unoccupied vehicle on his drive too.

As the video comes to an end, people watch as Stiles is faced with a choice of surrendering to the police, or driving his Jeep into the water.

He chooses the former, but takes a swig of whiskey before doing so.

Wright said that his behaviour on the video is characteristic of the man himself. She added: "It's not out of character for him to get angry and storm off.

"I feel like he couldn't handle the stress and that was it for him."

By Thursday evening, police had removed his car from the beach, and, with the video remaining on social media, will be able to use it as evidence.
