American chat show host Jimmy Kimmel broke down on his programme as he told the audience about his newly born son's open-heart surgery.

His wife, Molly McNearney, gave birth to their second child on April 21, but just hours later William 'Billy' Kimmel required a life saving operation.

During a segment where the 49-year-old directly addresses the studio audience with a monologue, he opened by saying: "It is a scary story... but it has a happy ending."

He then tearfully began to talk about how his wife gave birth to their baby boy, but he was instantly plagued with health issues.

At first he and Molly assumed he was fine, however a nurse noticed a murmur in his heart and also that his skin appeared "a bit purple".

"[The doctors] determined he wasn't getting enough oxygen in his blood, either in his heart or lungs," the host said. "They did an x-ray and his lungs were fine, which meant his heart wasn't. It's a terrifying thing.

"They found that Billy was born with a heart disease."

It was determined that young Billy had a hole on both sides of his heart, so was rushed to Children's Hospital Los Angeles for heart surgery.

Thankfully, the operation was a success, and six days later Jimmy and Molly were able to take their newborn son home.

"Every one of my friends was there 100 percent," said Jimmy. "We had atheists praying for us, okay? We had people who do not believe in God praying to him. And I hate to even say, but even that son-of-a-bitch Matt Damon sent flowers.

"Most of all, I want to thank my wife Molly. First of all, for allowing me to have sex with her in the first place, but also for being so strong and level-headed and positive and loving during the worst nightmare a new mother could experience."

He finished by asking the audience, and anyone watching to donate to Children's Hospital Los Angeles, as well as urging US politicians to make healthcare free to all Americans, something us Brits are currently very lucky to have.

Following the heartbreaking events, Kimmel is taking some well earned paternity leave and will be covered by a flurry of famous faces who'll aim to do the show justice in his absence.
