Mum Speaks Out About Her Son Being Made Into Vile Meme

Disgusting.

We're all guilty of lapping up memes without actually giving any real thought to them.

It's never really been a thing to think about where the pictures have come from, their background or context - but sometimes we definitely should.

Grayson Smith, a terminally ill toddler, was made into a disgraceful meme by 'vile trolls'.

The mother of Grayson, who was born with 22 birth anomalies and was given weeks to live, has spoken about the horrid reality of a picture of her son being used for cheap Internet laughs.

Jenny Smith had set up a Facebook page for her son called Facebook page Grayson's Story to raise money and awareness surrounding Grayson's condition, but was mortified when one of the pictures she posted was given the caption: "That face you make when your parents are actually cousins."

"My heart just sank," she told the BBC. "It was Grayson's first field trip to the pumpkin patch when he'd been able to pick out his very first pumpkin; and I had to fight back because I didn't want people to take such a special day from Grayson and turn it into something so cruel.

"I just can't believe that there are people out there who would use a child, especially anyone who has been ruled terminally disabled, like that."

Grayson defied the odds he was given, having already lived three-and-a-half years, despite being told he'd only live a few weeks. So far he's undergone 24 operations to his brain and head, as well as suffering from conditions including epilepsy, a heart defect, apnoea and protrusions of brain tissue through his skull.

Although the inspirational kid has been subject to vile abuse, Jenny says he's as cheerful as ever.

"He's very social and very heart-warming to everyone," she said. "You could be a complete stranger and he will offer you a hug. He's just very open and happy all the time."
