It seems that people are now more obsessed than ever with money being worth extra than its actual value.

We're seeing an awful lot of new five pound notes being sold for thousands because of a misprint or some other kind of defect, and although it seems ridiculous, we all wish we could sell one.

Due to the fact that fivers are usually spent far too quickly for us to check if it's got a picture of Tony Blair pulling a moony on the back, it's tough to work out whether it's worth more than five pounds. But hold on a minute, the spare change in your back pocket could be worth 10 times its worth.

The Manchester Evening News revealed that a rare 50p coin - the rarest in circulation in fact - could be worth £50 to the right buyer. If you have a 50p that has Kew Gardens on the face, you could be quids in.

Experts say that only 210,000 of the coins were made to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Royal Botanical Gardens in 2011.

People believe that only one person in 300 has one of these coins, meaning they're rather valuable to coin collectors.

Back in 1992 and 1993, there were limited edition 50p coins released which celebrated the British presidency of the European Council. Although these aren't as rare as the Kew Gardens coins, they will pocket you £20. That isn't exactly a lot, but it's more than 50p, so you do the maths.

As well as 50ps, certain 20 pence coins can also land you some extra dosh. Apparently, between 50,000 and 200,000 20ps with no date printed on them were circulated in 2008 due to an error at Royal Mint.

Get checking your pockets, wallets, jackets you haven't worn for months, and down the back of the sofa - you might be sitting on a gold mine.
