Lad Builds Portable Shelter For Homeless

Lad Builds Portable Shelter For Homeless

What a guy.

Over the Christmas period the heartbreaking reality of homelessness is intensified when you realise that some people will not only be spending the holidays alone, but will be spending it on the wet, windy and cold streets, too.

A lot of people try their hardest to do something for those who are less fortunate than us, and Mark Burgess is a prime example of that.

The 35-year-old built a portable shelter for homeless people, which includes a fire alarm, light, insulation, ventilation and a lock.

The shelter would keep the user warm, dry and safe, and can be moved to wherever.

"I walked around Cardiff on Christmas Eve and when I got to St Mary Street I saw a couple with a dog. I talked to them for a while and even though I had built it for one person they seemed keen so I took the guy to see it," Mark said. "He was really happy about the shelter. It can be pulled like a wheelbarrow but it has removable wheels so they can take the wheels off if they find a spot."

The shelter took Mark three days to build, and he plans to carry on building more only with lighter materials.

"The one I just made was quite heavy," he said. "I could pull it but an older person would struggle so I want the next one to be lighter. This one cost around £350 so I'm trying to raise money to make the next one.

"I want to continue making more so that more homeless people can have a dry and safe place to stay."
