Budget Airline Considering Scrapping Seats On Flights

Would you fly standing?

In a sign that we are truly living in the worst days, an airline is considering plans to remove all seats from its planes and making passengers stand.

I guess it solves that annoying problem of someone kicking your seat the entire way or the 'who's arm-rest is this, really?' debate.

Budget Colombian airline VivaColombia is hoping it can lower the costs of its flights by jamming more people in there, meaning more people can fly and to appeal to tourists on strict budgets.

The airline announced earlier this week it would be adding 50 new Airbus 320s to its fleet, as tourism grows in the country. These new planes will have seats, but still have pretty low running costs.

Colombia is making progress in shaking its 'violent reputation', the Miami Herald reports, with international tourism up 43 percent from the first four months of the year, compared to the same time period last year.

So now is the time to cash in, I guess.

Founder and CEO William Shaw told the Miami Herald: "There are people out there right now researching whether you can fly standing up - we're very interested in anything that makes travel less expensive.

"Who cares if you don't have an inflight entertainment system for a one-hour flight? Who cares that there aren't marble floors... or that you don't get free peanuts?"

Hmm, I think he's sort of convincing me.

Way back in 2010, before we were living in the worst days, Ryanair floated the idea of standing flights. Ryanair boss Micahel O'Leary was considering the idea of 'bar stools with seatbelts'. Honestly.

Bad news for O'Leary, though, because the Civil Aviation Authorities have not, so far, approved vertical seats.

Civil Aviation Director Alfredo Bocanegra told RCN radio in Colombia this week: "People have to travel like human beings.

"Anyone who has ridden on public mass transit knows that it's not the best when you're standing."

What do you guys reckon? Would you be happy to stand on a flight if you could save a few quid?
