After being subject to years of abuse, an Indian woman cut off a man's penis in an act being labelled 'courageous'.
The unnamed 23-year-old woman was the victim of rape over a number of years from a 54-year-old religious guru, reports the Hindustan Times.
Officers said that the man, Hari Swami, had had his genitals sliced off with a knife that the woman had hidden under her pillow.
The paper reports that he had exploited the woman over a five-year period, but claimed that he had cut off his own penis.
The woman is being applauded for her act with Pinarayi Vijayan, the chief minister of the southern state of Kerala, where the incident happened, calling it a 'courageous and strong act'.

The woman was at her residence in the state capital Thiruvananthapuram on Friday when she says she was attacked by the man.
District police chief G Sparjan Kumar told AFP: "She used a knife in her defence and cut off his penis.

"The man, Hari Swami, was rushed to the nearby government hospital in a serious state.
"The woman told us that her parents blindly trusted this Swami, and he used to get frequent invites to perform special ceremonies and stay over at their house, where he assaulted her."
Swami is believed to be in a stable condition after undergoing emergency medical procedures.
The girl's family, who live in the same house, claim to be unaware of any assaults from the man.
In India, rape can carry the death penalty in extreme cases, but other punishments include the paying of compensation to meet the medical expenses and rehabilitation of the victim.
