With lockdown restrictions easing, hotels reopening and people allowed to have a "cautious cuddle" from Monday, cheating spouses are chomping at the bit to go and meet their secret lovers once more. As a result, Monday 17th May has been officially branded "affair day."
As the name suggests, "affair day" is the day unfaithful partners will be able to cheat once again, with the easing of lockdown restrictions making it possible to book a hotel room to sneak away to.
"Lockdown has been cruel to people like us with unsuspecting husbands, wives, and children at home," admitted Sylvia Turner (not her real name) to The Daily Mail.

"We are wholly reliant on anonymous hotels to steal precious evenings and weekends together. It's a wonder I haven't gone crazy, cooped up at home with my husband of 16 years, whose best shot at romance these days is occasionally remembering to put petrol in the car and a son and two daughters so attached to their phones I can't remember the last time they looked me in the eye."

Despite an affair which has gone on for eight years and the infidelity in her marriage, Sylvia is still committed to her husband, and her lover, Tom, is committed to his wife.
"Affair day" was also the subject of a segment on ITV's This Morning. Hundreds of viewers had phoned in after the presenters were asking to hear from anybody who was worried about their partner having an affair. One of the show's agony aunts said Monday brings about anxiety for a lot of those people, with some viewers crying uncontrollably down the phone to her about their worries about so-called "affair day."
Is "affair day" a new thing? Sort of. It's not usually a thing on 17th May. In fact, research by Illicit Encounters - a dating website for married couples (yes, really) - revealed the most popular day for people to start an affair is 18th December. Coined "Cheat-mas", the stress of Christmas was cited as one of the reasons for this.
They've also found that the most popular day to be dumped is the Tuesday before Valentine's day, "Red Tuesday."
