Despite the apparent amputation of his leg, the man seems to be completely unphased by his missing body part

A photograph has emerged that seems to show a man with one of his legs completely severed on the ground in front of him captured on Google Maps.

People are often snapped in eye-catching scenes as they go about their everyday lives - and this deeply disturbing image photographed in rural Ukraine is one such example.

The shot - taken in 2014 but still visible today - shows a man and woman appear to be taking a break from their hike, sitting on their huge rucksacks.

But incredibly, much to the bewilderment of many, the man is seen smiling for the camera - despite missing the bottom half of his left leg.

Amazingly, he shows no pain or horror at the shocking accident that appears to have occurred and even manages to muster up a smile.

The woman also shows no consternation, leading viewers to wonder whether perhaps there's more to the shot than meets the eye.

Rather than a horrendous calamity befalling the hiker, the alarming image in fact seems to be the result of a technological glitch with the Google cameras.

On closer inspection, the apparently severed limb is actually blurry at the top, while the man's left leg actually finishes at his ankle, thus not matching the lower leg.

Moving objects often ruin the scene as they shift when the photos are taken - hence the shocking scene.

This isn't the first time that Google Maps has picked up weird and wonderful images, though.

Just last month, users on Reddit discovered a man with his trousers round his ankles having a poo in a field in the Netherlands.

When you've gotta go, you've gotta go, right?

Meanwhile, eagle-eyed users have joked that the site confirms 'a route to Heaven' as a road seems to disappear into the sky.

The fairly low-res image shows a tarmacked road that seems to stretch on until it meets the sky, the ground on both sides of the road is white, which again blends into the sky above.

A Reddit user posted the screenshot, asking: "Is this the road to Heaven?" before sharing the information on where the road was.

If you fancy taking a drive to Heaven yourself then you'll need to head to Chambers in Arizona, as that's where the shot was taken.
