McDonald’s Milkshake Fans Devastated By National Supply Shortage

McDonald’s Milkshake Fans Devastated By National Supply Shortage

First KFC, then Nando's and now McDonald's. Whatever next?!

McDonald's fans across the UK are devastated as milkshakes have been taken off the menu due to a supply shortage.

It's the latest blow to the fast-food industry, which has been experiencing regular supply issues due to Brexit and Covid-19.

First, KFC ran out of chicken, followed by Nando's, which even had to close 50 restaurants last week due to the shortages. Now McDonald's is out of milkshakes and bottled drinks.

Why is McDonald's out of milkshakes?

The lack of 'shakes' has been caused by a combination of the changes in immigration rules with Brexit, a shortage of lorry drivers, and Covid-19 restrictions, which is resulting in supplies getting held up at the UK border.

A McDonald's spokesperson told Sky News: "Like most retailers, we are currently experiencing some supply chain issues, impacting the availability of a small number of products," the company said.

"Bottled drinks and milkshakes are temporarily unavailable in restaurants across England, Scotland and Wales."

"We apologise for any inconvenience, and thank our customers for their continued patience. We are working hard to return these items to the menu as soon as possible."

Logistics UK, which represents freight firms, and the British Retail Consortium, said in a letter to the government that a "current shortfall of around 90,000 HGV drivers is placing unsustainable pressure on retailers and their supply chains."

"While there was a shortage of HGV drivers prior to the Covid-19 pandemic and Brexit, these two events have exacerbated the situation," they explained.

"The pandemic halted driver training and testing for more than 12 months, while an estimated 25,000 EU drivers returned home during the pandemic and following the end of the transition period."

McDonald's milkshake fans say it's a "Brexit shambles"

Many Twitter users are dubbing the latest fast-food shortage a "Brexit shambles."

"McDonalds what - no milkshakes????" one gutted Twitter user wrote.

"McDonalds has run out of milkshakes! The end is nigh!" said another.

"The only reason to go to McDonalds has now disappeared thanks to Brexs**t!" wrote another disappointed customer.

"Would you like extra Brexit with your fries? We've no milkshakes though," one joked.

"So McDonalds has run out of milkshakes now .. nandos ran out of chicken last week . The civilised world as we know it is falling apart ...." said another, sarcastically.

And of course, some Twitter users couldn't resist a punny reference to Kelis's 2003 song Milkshake...

"Thoughts and prayers with Kelis today... #McDonalds #nomilkshakesintheyard."

"Milkshake shortage? Bet @kelis is fuming... #McDonalds," joked another.

And one guy has even re-written Kelis's song amid this milkshake crisis:

"My Brexit wasn't meant to be this hard. Now they're like... ''There's nothing in stores.''

Yeah they're like... "We warned you before"

F*** the EU... We hold all the cards!

#Mcdonalds #Milkshake."

While other McDonald's fans said the news of no milkshakes was nothing new, as the "machine is always broken" or "being cleaned."

"How exactly has #McDonalds run out of milkshakes when the machine is always broken?"
