Marvel's upcoming movie Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings' dramatic first trailer has been released - and boy, does it look good.

Check out the movie's official trailer below:

To celebrate Chinese-Canadian star Simu Liu's birthday, Marvel finally revealed the first look at its upcoming superhero flick - and it looks like it'll be another hit for the studio and Disney.

The two-minute trailer gives us our first look at the main protagonist in Marvel's first movie that centres on an Asian superhero, which will see Shang-Chi confront his past and battle with the villainous Ten Rings organisation.

He may not be a household name yet - like his fellow heroes Iron Man or Captain America - but the idea of making a Shang-Chi movie is older than the Marvel Cinematic Universe itself.

Created by Steve Englehart and Jim Starlin, the kung-fu master made his comics debut in 1973 as a way for Marvel to capitalise on martial arts stories' popularity with American audiences.

Now, after a history of false starts, the martial arts master is finally getting his turn in the spotlight.

When will it be released?

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is set to be released in cinemas on September 3.

Will it be on Disney Plus?

While the official trailer and poster will take up much of fans' interest, it's intriguing to note that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will not be coming to Disney Plus.

As the caption on Marvel Studios' tweet states, fans can "experience it only in theatres" when it is released on September 3.

This is in stark contrast to Black Widow's launch on July 9, with the delayed Scarlett Johansson-fronted flick receiving a simultaneous release in cinemas and on Disney's streaming service.

Black Widow will cost an additional fee when it comes to Disney Plus, too, for anyone who wasn't aware.

What is the plot?

Chinese-Canadian actor Simu Liu stars as the young hero, who spent the first part of his life training to become an assassin under his father's strict tutelage.

He's since walked away and tried to build a somewhat normal life in America, only to find himself sucked back into his father's sinister domain.

When we first meet Shang-Chi in the trailer, he appears to be living a normal life in San Francisco, having been given ten years to life by his father Wenwu.

We soon learn that the young hero has been trained up by father "so the most dangerous people in the world couldn't kill you."

"Son it's time for you to take your place by my side," Wenwu says in a voiceover as we see him in front of the Ten Rings logo, which we've seen before in the MCU and, most notably, in Iron Man 3 with the fake Mandarin.

The film also stars Shang-Chi's friend Katy who, based on the trailer, gets dragged into the dangerous world he left behind.

With that being said, Shang-Chi soon finds himself sucked back into his old life, but will he manage to leave his father's villainous legacy behind for good?
